Banana Open celebrates its 20th year in Asheville

Cynthia Beane (Waynesville) and David Williams (Asheville), excelled to reach the finals of the Mixed Combined 9.0 division last Sunday, and were defeated by Diofra Azucenas (CLT) and Russell McKoy (CLT), 7-5, 7-6.

Asheville Racquet Club South hosted the Banana Open Tennis Tournament over two weekends, August 6th and 13th. More than 95 singles matches and 265 doubles matches were played over the two weekends. Players came from all over the region, as well as South Carolina and Tennessee. Hart Wainwright, the tournament director was glad to report, “We have seen about four hundred and fifty tennis players show up for the Banana Open this year, more turnout than last year’s tourney.” The age divisions and levels of play included nine singles and eighteen doubles
divisions. Dottie Mattern was tourney referee.

Among other tournaments this year, ARC South will host the USTA Southern Chmps 40 and over, Aug 18-22; the NC Mixed Doubles State Chmps on Sept 8-11; the USTA Southern Chmps 65 and over on Sept 16-18; The Jason Michael Armstrong Memorial Tournament (ARC South only) on Sept 23-25; and the Club Championships on Oct 8-9 (ARC South only).  See for full tournament listings.
