Habitat Restore announces 2017 Reuse Contest winners

Reuse RS

The Asheville Habitat ReStore is pleased to announce the winners of its fifth annual ReStore ReUse Contest. The entries, ranging from benches to bathrooms and everything in between, were built using predominantly reused materials. The panel of five judges selected winners in four categories: Furniture, Homesteading, Live/Work Space, Home Décor, and Best in Show. The 2017 winners are:

Best in Show – Jesse Swain (Leicester); This dining set incorporated heritage from both sides of the family.

Furniture – Lisa J. Wood (Asheville); a bench made from an old, discarded porch. Upon completion, it was donated to a silent auction at Valley Springs Middle School. (Bonus: the rest of the scrap wood was turned into rustic candlesticks.)

Homesteading – Peter Steurer (Mills River); This Asheville Habitat core construction volunteer built a chicken coop from nearly 100% reused materials. The only new materials were screws and wire mesh.

Live/Work Space – Nancy E. Diamond (Cosby, TN); This winner said, “It was challenging and fun for an old lady of 70 years old.” Instead of discarding laminate wood flooring that was being pulled up to install a new bath, she reused it by installing it on the walls.

Home Decor – Dalleen McClasky (Hendersonville); A hallway converted to laundry area utilized a myriad of reused materials.

The purpose of the contest is to showcase innovative projects constructed predominantly of used building materials. Entries were judged on quality of design and execution; replicability of concept; clarity of description; and quality of photos. Winner received gift certificates to the Habitat ReStore.

“Judging the reuse contest is one of my favorite things to do. I love to see how people reuse materials or repurpose them into something entirely different,” said judge and ReStore General Manager Scott Stetson.

In addition to Stetson, the judging panel included:

Joel Johnson, Habitat’s Home Repair Supervisor

Ferrin Cole, ReUse Contest Winner (2015 and 2016)

Michelle Bevans, Habitat homeowner and reuse enthusiast

Eric Bradford, Director of Operations for Asheville Greenworks
