Artistic Director, David Starkey, exclaims “Man of La Mancha really is genuine culmination of a classic old story and grand vocal score. It will allow us to draw upon the producing elements that audiences have come to expect from the Asheville Lyric Opera. This show in its original acoustic representation with the ALO Orchestra and the rich full voices of our classical singers will truly be an exceptional and extraordinary experience!”

Based on Miguel de Cervantes’ timeless novel, Don Quixote, this musical tells the epic story of knight-errant Don Quixote, his servant Sancho and the woman of his dreams. Set in the time of the Spanish Inquisition, the tale tells of a knight who embarks on a noble journey of chivalry to seek out the innocent in a world full of evil and capture “The Impossible Dream,” staying true to himself and his ideals until the very end. The entire tale is told by Cervantes, an aging playwright, poet and tax collector who has been thrown into a dungeon in Seville to await trial by the Inquisition for an offense against the Church. He acts out this drama in order to keep his incomplete manuscript of Don Quixote. After completing his play, Cervantes is summoned to his real trial by the Inquisition. The prisoners unite to sing him “The Impossible Dream” as he is dragged to the doom of his sentence.
