The first Carolina Mountain Cheese Fest was held this past Sunday April 26 at Highland Brewing. It was an overwhelming success with attendees numbering well over 1,000.
Working with the WNC Cheese Trail Board of Directors, Katie Moore took on the role of festival coordinator and collaboratively produced the first annual Carolina Mountain Cheese Fest
The WNC Cheese Trail is a collaborative effort of a handful of cheesemakers in Western North Carolina who are dedicated to their craft. How that translates for WNC is that there is an amazing industry right here in the hills of Western North Carolina that’s a sustainable, integral part of our local economy. The goals of the WNC Cheese Trail, a non-profit organization, are to facilitate consumer education, promote the production and sale of WNC artisan cheeses, and encourage tourism to the region to benefit member producers.
In addition to 30 vendors, the Fest included a small petting zoo, a grilled cheese cook off, a bicycle butter churn, a mozzarella pull and a history of cheese presentation to name a few. Cheese was certainly the main product offered along with bread, crackers, preserves, charcuterie, chocolate and a specially made gelato that included cheese from some of our local makers.
The pairing workshops and discussions were also well attended.More information can be found on the website: www.mountaincheesefest.com.
